Individualized Study Tutor

Athabasca University’s Learning Services Tutorial Department is seeking an Individualized Study Tutor for the following course:

CMNS 201 Introduction to Mass Media: http://www.athabascau.ca/syllabi/cmns/cmns201.php

This position is responsible for providing academic support to students and for marking assignments and exams.

Qualifications and Experience Required:  Minimum of a Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Communication Studies or a directly related discipline is required, with emphasis on the role of mass media in society from critical and historical perspectives. Candidate’s research and teaching experience should reflect an understanding of the relationship between mass media and culture in the context of social relationships and power structures, the role of the media in influencing Canadian culture, Canadian communications policy, theories of representation, digital and new media studies, and audiences. An ability to relate theoretical approaches to areas of professional practice and everyday life is considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing academic assistance to students, for marking assignments, and for assigning and recording final grades.  Teaching experience at a post-secondary level is required.  Experience in distance learning and familiarity with distance education and digital teaching technologies is preferred.  Experience with adult education and Moodle online course delivery is considered an asset.  All educational credentials must be recognized in Canada.

Along with the relevant academic credentials as mentioned above, this position requires excellent communication, organizational, administration and online/computer skills.  The successful candidate should have demonstrated ability to maintain a high academic standard, maintain accurate student records, and return students’ work promptly.  Candidates must own or have access to a computer and Internet with the capability to communicate with the University and students and the capability to run any applications required to perform tutorial support.  Please see http://itss.athabascau.ca/docs/virtualdesktop.htm for more information on computer and Internet connection requirements.
