Working within the technical group at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (RTMP), the technical assisant will be responsible for undertaking technical work on specimens in the collections of the RTMP including mechanical preparation, assisting with the casting and molding of specimens, and developing digital models of specimens through the use of photogrammetry and CT data. Reporting to the Head Technician and working closely with research and preparation staff, the technical assistant will undertake technical work on specimens within the collection; will assist in staff training on preparation and digitizing techniques; and will support fieldwork in various designated localities.

 

Qualifications 

Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. in Palaeontology, Archaeology, Collections Management, Conservation) and related experience working with palaeontology collections, ideally fossil preparation of dinosaurs and other Mesozoic aged fauna.

  • Technical skills – familiarity with computer programs related to digitizing specimens and ability to learn new programs related to 3-D modeling of specimens.
  • Experience with basic computer tools such as MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
  • Experience with digital photography and digital photography software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems, work under pressure and prioritize work to meet competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, and be able to pay attention to a high level of detail with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate a positive and flexible attitude.
