This incumbent is a key member of the Research Centre team and has primary responsibility for the accounting, financial reporting, and administration of research accounts. The incumbent is also responsible for providing both general and financial administrative support to the Research Centre in its operations. 


Consistent with the Research Centre’s strong customer focus, the incumbent uses accounting skills, systems aptitude, and knowledge of applicable policies, funding requirements, and pertinent external regulations (e.g. federal, provincial, sponsor) to provide effective, efficient and timely service and support to Athabasca University (AU) researchers in the management of their research funds. 


The impact and scope of this position requires the use of judgment, discretion, excellent communication skills, and a high level of confidentiality.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum two years post-secondary education in accounting, financial administration or related discipline with five years experience in a related field (or equivalent combination of formal education and work experience).  
  • Proven financial accounting skills and a firm understanding of accounting principles and practices. Comprehensive knowledge of accounting processes, in particular General Ledger (e.g. journal entries, revenue and expense accounts), Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable functions. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage project budgets in accordance with established guidelines. 
  • Superior interpersonal and organizational abilities combined with excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Superior attention to detail. 
  • Proficiency with computerized applications including MSOffice (Word, Excel, in particular), email and other software programs. Willingness and capacity to become proficient in using other programs (e.g., AU Research Portal, Banner, Alfresco, COGNOS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, adapt priorities while working under changing situations and conditions, and perform work accurately and competently with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.  
  • Demonstrated project management skills.  
  • Ability to work in a deadline driven fast paced environment. 

Desired Experience

  • Knowledge of research funding environment (federal, provincial and private sector).
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, and research and finance related policies and procedures in particular. 
  • Ability to interpret the terms and conditions of contracts/agreements.
