Athabasca University Library is seeking an experienced, creative, and dynamic librarian for the position of Associate University Librarian, Collections Services.


The Associate University Librarian, Collections Services is:

  • Responsible for the operations of the Collections Services Unit of the Library (cataloguing, acquisitions, and the Integrated Library System).
  • Supervises and builds the Collections Services team.
  • Provides system support for AU Library systems, including the Integrated Library System and interlibrary loan systems.
  • Works closely with the Associate University Librarian, Learning & Research Services and others to ensure that work of the Collections Services team integrates with services at the Library Information Desk.
  • Supports collection development and maintenance in conjunction with the University Librarian and the Associate University Librarian, Learning & Research Services.
  • Works closely with vendors, publishers, and the Associate University Librarian, Library Academic Services Support to ensure that Library databases and resources are accessible and optimized to support the needs of the AU community, and in resolving access issues.



  • MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited library school is required.
  • Minimum two years supervisory experience, including the assessment and training of staff is required. Experience in managing a cataloguing, acquisitions, or library systems team is highly desirable.
  • Minimum two years’ experience as a librarian, cataloguing and managing library systems is required, preferably in an academic library.
  • A solid understanding of standards and electronic formats used in the library community including: MARC, RDA (Resource Description & Access), AACR (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules), Library of Congress classification system and subject headings, HTML, XML, and Dublin Core is required.
  • Experience managing an Integrated Library System is required; experience managing the Innovative Interfaces Sierra Integrated Library System is highly desirable.
  • Experience with collection analysis tools, including Counter reports is highly desirable.
  • Experience in negotiation with vendors and publishers is highly desired.
  • A working knowledge of commonly used Library related software and PC hardware is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines is required.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to accuracy and detail are required.
  • Experience with data library services and government documents is desirable.
