The Manager of Digital Experience is a new role under the Director of Digital Experience and Governance. Working collectively as part of cross-divisional team realized through the embedded resource model, this role will provide leadership and expertise in the creation of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design plans, processes, and standards across all AU interfaces (e.g., websites, web applications, self-serve systems).

This role executes or oversees the implementation of UX/UI-related activities to support strategic, operational, or project-based objectives and ensures these activities are executed in accordance with adopted UX/UI design and development processes and standards to facilitate a cohesive and quality digital experience for all users, particularly AU learners. This requires research on target end-users, market spaces, products, and services and developing UX/UI related artifacts (e.g., use cases, personas, journey maps, surveys) to gain insights on user behavior(s) to inform solution planning. It also involves establishing an iterative and user-centred design process that engages users (e.g., students) to validate the usability of designs before deployment to improve acceptance of delivered solutions and to mitigate rework.

The position also develops, implements, and manages UX/UI monitoring and reporting capabilities to gauge the effectiveness of deployed solutions and turns identified shortcomings into recommended action plans. The role also solicits and records UX/UI-related improvements identified by stakeholders to inform continuous improvement activities and works closely with technical writers and trainers to ensure training resources facilitate the adoption and optimization of solutions by the target users.

The quality of interface design solutions delivered to learners (and other user types) has a direct impact on the quality of the end-user experience. This experience impacts recruitment and retention behaviours, therefore, creating and maintaining a positive user experience will be essential in supporting realization of AU’s strategic goals.

The position requires a self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse and distributed team. It requires knowledge from a broad range of design-related disciplines and technical proficiencies to create, test, and implement interface designs based on evidence and in accordance with AU’s adopted standards and practices.

Education and Experience:

This position requires a graduate of a recognized four-year degree program, preferably in web design, new media, multimedia or a related discipline, along with ten years of related experience in user interface and user experience design and development including 5 years leading UX/UI related design teams.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

Required Skills:

This position requires advanced knowledge of:

  • User experience and user interface design and related standards;
  • Web design (including responsive design) and related protocols, standards, and services;
  •  Accessibility standards and best practices;
  • User-centred design and usability testing methodologies and practices;
  • JavaScript (JS) and JS frameworks and libraries (e.g., Bootstrap 4, Flexbox);
  • HTML5;
  •  XML, XHTML;
  •   PHP;
  •  Relational databases (e.g., mySQL); and
  • Web analytics and reporting;

This position also requires:

  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., written, oral, visual) and the ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical individuals;
  •  Excellent analytical, conceptual, problem solving, and critical thinking abilities; and
  • The ability to conduct research into emerging technologies and trends, standards, products, services, market spaces, and best practices

Additional Desirable Skills:

  •  Knowledge of human factors and psychology (behavioural design);
  •  Knowledge of content management and web publishing systems;
  • Knowledge of learning management systems;
  • Knowledge of visual communication design (graphic design);
  • Experience with Microsoft Office/O365
  •  Experience with management talent residing in different office locations remotely;
  • Experience with software development methodologies; and
  • Experience with project management methodologies
