The IT Project Manager, Steady State Initiatives Specialist (ITPMS) position manages the planning, execution, and implementation of the university’s information and communications technology (ICT) projects related to ongoing IT infrastructure and services improvements.  The ITPMS is responsible for using project management processes, standards, templates and tools that support on-time, on-budget delivery of project scope.   Additionally the ITPMS supervises and mentors project work of all staff assigned to a project.

Reporting to the Digital Transformation Architect, the ITPMS works collaboratively with IT staff, IT managers, contractors and vendors, and stakeholders throughout the University to deliver continuous improvement IT projects on time and on budget that support AU’s strategic and operational plans.

This position fill a significant gap in our capability to deliver continuous improvement IT projects such as infrastructure upgrades and software upgrades in the midst of our broader digital transformation. Project management and oversight for these types of projects is currently performed by IT managers, but their capacity to lead projects effectively will be minimal with the digital transformation initiatives being undertaken.

If you have a passion for successfully managing projects that drastically improve the foundation of the IT environment, join our Alberta-based Information Technology team as our IT Project Manager, Steady State Initiatives Specialist. As Canada’s only digital-first university, join us in transforming traditional online learning to the secure cloud and code campus of the future.

Moving Beyond Place, AU is a semi-virtual organization anchored by three administration hubs across Alberta.  Therefore, this role has the option of being located in Athabasca, Calgary or Edmonton.

Where applicants have equal skills, abilities, and experience candidates who are willing to relocate within the County of Athabasca will be given preference. The vibrant town of Athabasca is located in the heart of Alberta’s boreal forest on the banks of the Athabasca River. The community offers modern services, affordable housing, excellent public schools, and a variety of recreational activities to suit everyone’s lifestyle.

Athabasca University offers an interest-free loan for new employees who relocate within Athabasca County or the Town of Athabasca.

  • This position requires a four-year degree in computer science, management or engineering, recognized in Canada, and a minimum of five years of relevant project management experience.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Strong familiarity with MS Project.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to take a practical approach to dealing with shifting priorities, demands and timelines
  • Ability to learn, understand and apply new technologies
  • Experience in managing IT projects related to infrastructure upgrades or replacement, end user computing environment upgrades, and enterprise software upgrades.
  • Delivery-oriented and tenacious attitude
