Athabasca University's Faculty of Business is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Financial Economist and Analytics.

This is a term position ending February 2027. 


The Position:

This position provides a unique opportunity for a postdoctoral to contribute to the development of data analytics and financial economics through their contributions to Athabasca University funded projects: policy risk premium analysis faced by oil and gas companies, governance and financial market stability across the globe, financial frauds detection and mitigation in mortgage markets.

Under the supervision of Drs. Hussein Al-Zyoud, Albert Gyamfi and Eric Wang, the successful candidate will utilize expertise in financial economics and data analytics to bring the projects to completion within a half-year period and for submission for publications in top quality academic journals such as INFORMS Journal on Computing, and MIS Quarterly. The initial appointment is for six months with a possibility of extension subject to performance and the availability of funds.

Key Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Researcher will:

  • Perform a comprehensive review of relevant literature on financial fraud, governance and financial market stability and producing literature summaries as required to other team members relevant to specific topics.
  • Collect, clean, and manage large archival datasets.
  • Conduct rigorous empirical analyses.
  • Lead and contribute to manuscript writing for submission to top-tier academic journals.
  • Prepare project updates and knowledge mobilization materials for partners.
  • Assist in the development of funding applications related to the research.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have earned a Ph.D. in economics or financial economics, demonstrated strong academic record and a competitive list of publications in leading academic journals, have research interests that align with the expertise of the research team, be able to work effectively in collaborative and interdisciplinary research environments. The candidate must have a good command of quantitative analysis skills and be able to make advanced use of Python, R, MATLAB, EViews, SPSS and Stata.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills with the ability to pivot to changing priorities.
  • Evidence of strong communication skills, including the ability to disseminate scholarly findings in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Some travel may be required.
