Athabasca University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is recruiting for an Assistant Professor, Labour Relations

The Position

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Human Resources-Labour Relations (HRLR) Program, which is housed in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Athabasca University is a fully-accredited, comprehensive academic and research post-secondary institution with a commitment to facilitating open access to education.

This is a full-time position located in Alberta commencing June 2, 2025.

Applications are encouraged from those whose scholarship and teaching critically addresses Human Resources and Labour Relations. We are seeking a candidate with an active research program and publication record in one or more of the following areas: (1) the changing nature of work: technology, artificial intelligence, climate change and sustainable labour; (2) work in relation to race, gender, disability and human rights; and (3) global labour issues.

The successful candidate will teach, coordinate, and revise existing asynchronous online undergraduate courses and be expected to develop and teach new courses based on their research expertise and as determined by the needs of the program. Commitment to exploring and advancing the use of contemporary digital technologies in online teaching and learning is preferred. When opportunities arise, the successful candidate will be required to teach in the graduate program(s). Evidence of teaching excellence is required, and experience in supervising graduate students will be considered an asset.

All faculty members are expected to participate in administrative committees, including those pertaining to centre, faculty, or university-wide endeavors. Additionally, members are expected to participate in service to the greater external community.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Labour Studies, Sociology, or Employment/Industrial Relations; a robust research portfolio; a commitment to online and public education; and a successful record of securing tri-agency or similar funds. PhDs in related disciplines and with a work-related focus may be considered.

Experience in community education, distance learning and familiarity with digital teaching technologies would also be preferred assets.
